Support a Discreet Pad Change After an Incontinence Incident

Updated: Jul 22

💡 “I want to help—but I don’t want to embarrass them.”

Sound familiar? If you’ve ever supported someone through a continence incident, you’ll know it’s not just about the physical change—it’s about protecting their comfort, confidence and dignity in that vulnerable moment.

This week’s blog is for the real-world care workers out there. Whether you're in community care, residential, or supported living, here's how to navigate pad changes with compassion and professionalism.

What to Say (and What Not to)

Do say:

  • “Let me help you change.”

  • “It’s totally okay—these things happen.”

  • “I’m here to support you, let’s take our time.”

Avoid saying:

  • “You’ve had another incident.”

  • “I just changed you!”

  • Anything that focuses on the mess over the person.

Why it matters: The way you speak can reduce shame and preserve dignity. Use a calm, neutral tone and reassure them it’s part of your role—not a burden.

How to Guide Someone Through a Pad Change

  1. Ask First – Even if they’ve had help before, always ask: “Would you like help changing?” or “Are you okay if I assist you now?”

  2. Offer Options – If possible, offer choices: “Would you prefer to change standing, sitting, or lying down?”

  3. Be Calm and Efficient – Have supplies ready before approaching them. This reduces exposure time and stress.

  4. Keep Communication Open – Talk them through each step. “I’m just going to help you remove the old pad now. You let me know if anything feels uncomfortable.”

Where to Stand and How to Protect Dignity

Positioning Tips:

  • Stand to the side, not directly in front. It gives them a sense of privacy, even in close quarters.

  • Use towels or sheets to cover exposed areas where possible.

  • Face away when not actively assisting, like when handing wipes or opening packaging.

Extra dignity tips:

  • Keep a clean shirt or wrap nearby in case they want to cover up quickly.

  • If in shared settings, close doors, draw curtains, and minimise noise from outside.
